I’ve heard of scoliosis, but I never thought I’d be this involved with it until I did sports with my sibling. I noticed that one side of my sibling’s back was higher when she bent. I immediately told my parents. This is how this process started. During my sister’s check-ups, we learned that I also had low angle scoliosis. During the physiotherapy process, I learned that scoliosis is a disease that is seen more than I expected. Considering that 3 out of every 100 people in the world have scoliosis, raising awareness is important for the health of future generations. The sooner the treatment is started, the less complaints and injuries due to scoliosis.
Scoliosis is a 3-dimensional deformity involving the spine turning and tilting. The exact cause of 85% of scoliosis has not been determined. These are called idiopathic scoliosis. This disease is more common in girls than boys and is usually diagnosed between the ages of 10-15. Public awareness is very important in early detection of scoliosis. Therefore, attention should be paid to the shoulder levels, the level of the shoulder blades, whether the waist hollows are symmetrical, and whether the upper limits of the pelvis are at the same level. Scoliosis can be noticed with these observations, which can be made by parents, teachers and even by the person himself. Physiotherapists and physicians, who professionalized in this field, can also diagnose by doing Adams forward bend, plumb line, cobb’s angle and palm tests. Generally, different treatment methods are used according to the person’s spine bending angle. Schroth treatment and physiotherapy may be required for under 20 degrees, corset treatment for 20 degrees and above, and surgical intervention for 40 degrees and above.
Schroth treatment for under 20 degrees is the name given to the three-dimensional physiotherapy system developed by the German physiotherapist Katharina Schroth, who also suffers from scoliosis. In this treatment, it is aimed to correct the rotations and curvatures in the spine with a special breathing technique. This early treatment may slow or even stop the progression of scoliosis in patients. Corset treatment is applied for 20 degrees and above. With this treatment, it is aimed to put the spine in the abnormal position into a normal position with the help of a corset worn on the body. The chances of surgical intervention can be reduced by wearing a corset. The curvature of the spine can be reduced or stopped. Today, personalized corsets are made with CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) and plaster measurement method. Surgical interventions including freezing or screw applications can be performed from the front or back of the spine for 40 degrees and above.
Like scoliosis, osture disorders are also on the rise in these periods. One of the reasons why posture disorders occur is that we sit incorrectly during the quarantine process. These also cause back and waist pain. If you ask students, many will complain about back pain. Symmetrical sports such as swimming, gymnastics and yoga can be performed to prevent scoliosis and posture disorders or to reduce its progression.
Scoliosis can affect not only the external appearance of the body, but also the heart, vascular and respiratory systems and cause problems with oxygenation of the blood. Not only the quality of life but also the psychology of the patient is affected by scoliosis. The work of the person, his clothing choices, even his career choices may be affected by this situation. This is why awareness of this disease, which affects the person’s life in many ways, is very important. Scoliosis is a more common and serious disease than we think. The last Saturday of June of every year is scoliosis awareness day. I invite you to wear green on June 26 this year to announce the importance of early detection of scoliosis. Let’s not forget that the sooner the diagnosis is, the better it is!
